In his recent Mann Ki Baat address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored India's growing prominence in artificial intelligence, highlighting the nation’s ability to harness new technologies for societal progress. Reflecting on his visit to Paris for the AI Action Summit, he noted how global leaders acknowledged India's rapid advancements in AI and its potential to lead the sector.
PM Modi also praised innovative uses of AI at the grassroots level, citing the example of Thodasam Kailash, a schoolteacher in Telangana’s Adilabad, who is leveraging AI to preserve tribal languages. By using AI tools to compose songs in languages like Kolami, Kailash is ensuring linguistic heritage is documented and accessible to future generations.
The Prime Minister reiterated the transformative potential of AI in sectors like healthcare, agriculture, and education, stating that AI is “writing the code for humanity” in this century. He also emphasized the need for global AI governance and ethical AI frameworks, reinforcing India’s commitment to shaping AI’s future responsibly.
Additionally, Bhashini, India’s AI-powered language translation initiative, continues to break linguistic barriers, making digital content accessible in multiple Indian languages. The initiative aligns with India’s broader vision of inclusive AI adoption, ensuring that technology benefits citizens across regions and languages.
AI Jobs Surge in India: Skilling & Career Opportunities
As the global AI race accelerates, India is taking decisive steps to equip its youth with cutting-edge skills and create employment opportunities under the ambitious IndiaAI Mission. Recent government initiatives include the expansion of the IndiaAI Fellowship to candidates from diverse disciplines, providing GPU access for AI-driven innovation, and establishing 200 IndiaAI data labs in Tier 2 and 3 cities to offer foundational AI courses.

MeitY Launches Rolling GPU Empanelment to Boost AI Compute Capacity
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has introduced a rolling empanelment process for AI cloud service providers under the IndiaAI Mission, allowing firms to apply continuously to supply GPUs and AI compute services. This follows the August 2024 GPU tender, which aimed to procure 10,000+ GPUs, and the January 2025 procurement of nearly 19,000 units. Unlike previous one-time bidding processes, the new model ensures ongoing competition by requiring new entrants to match or beat the lowest discovered GPU rates.
This move is expected to boost India’s AI computing capacity while reducing costs for AI startups and researchers. The empanelment is open to data center providers, cloud service providers (CSPs), managed service providers (MSPs), and system integrators, with applicants evaluated based on technical expertise, financial strength, installed GPU capacity, and AI compute offerings. MeitY will renew the empanelment every quarter, inviting revised financial proposals from participants, which can be the same or lower than existing L1 rates. Additionally, empaneled providers must offer a self-service portal for AI compute access and ensure that at least 70% of GPUs support FP64 (double precision) capabilities. In line with the IndiaAI Mission’s subsidized AI access model, up to 40% of GPU costs will be covered through a coupon-based system, fostering AI adoption across industries. The first deadline for applications under this continuous empanelment is April 30, 2025, with evaluations starting in May 2025, though new firms can apply in subsequent rounds.
IndiaAI Mission: Over 50 Companies Compete to Develop India’s Own LLMs, SLMs
The IndiaAI Mission is witnessing strong industry participation, with over 50 companies vying to develop India-specific foundation models, including Large Language Models (LLMs) and Small Language Models (SLMs). Around a dozen firms are focusing on LLMs, while others are working on sector-specific SLMs. The government has mandated that these AI models must meet key parameters such as scalability, feasibility, and practicality, with funding allocated based on their problem-solving potential. To qualify, participants must submit a proof of concept (PoC), which will be reviewed by a technical evaluation committee before shortlisted companies can proceed with development. MeitY has collaborated with AI experts over the past 18 months to establish a robust framework for these models, reinforcing India’s ambition to become a global leader in AI innovation.
India-UK Deepen Ties in Telecom and AI Collaboration
India has strengthened its telecom and AI collaboration with the UK through high-level engagements, research partnerships, and a new MoU between C-DOT and SONIC Labs to drive Open RAN innovation. Secretary (Telecom) Dr. Neeraj Mittal led discussions with key UK agencies, including DSIT, the Alan Turing Institute, and leading universities, exploring cooperation in 6G, AI for telecom security, digital twins, and quantum communication. The visit also emphasized joint contributions to ITU’s 6G standards (IMT 2030), testing lab recognition, and submarine cable security. The UK-India Telecom Roundtable, organized by the High Commission of India, brought together industry leaders to advance shared goals in next-gen network technologies and digital infrastructure security.
